Dry ice

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2). It's called "dry ice" because it does not melt like wet ice. Instead, dry ice converts into carbon dioxide gas. The temperature of dry ice is extremely low (-78°C), it is non-toxic and completely dry. As a result, properly insulated gloves must always be worn when handling dry ice. Dry ice is commonly used as an expendable refrigerant to ship frozen food or medical products or to cool materials during production. During warm seasons, it is a great help in parties, since it can keep served foods and beverages properly cooled. It can also be used for decoration, for example for creating fog.

The other major use of dry ice is for dry ice blast cleaning, an effective and environmentally friendly way to clean industrial equipment. Dry ice is manufactured as grains or pellets, with a grain diameter of 10 mm and length 20 mm. Another form is dry ice blocks, with each block wrapped in a protective sheet of paper.
